1、LMAO意思是laughing my ass off 也就是“笑死寶寶了”。早在互聯網普及之前，一些小年輕就開始用laughing my ass off了。塞林格的小說《麥田裏的守望者》中就用到過它，男主角形容他看過的一部電影：“It ends up with everybody at this long dinner table laughing their asses off because the great Dane comes in with a bunch of puppies.”（最後，大家坐在長桌邊狂笑不止，因爲一隻大丹狗領着一羣小狗崽進來了。）

2、1989年，LMTO，即laughing my tush off（笑掉狗牙）就在網絡上流傳了。

3、一年之後，在網遊《龍與地下城》中，它的2.0版——LMAO橫空出世。
